What you can learn

PROGRAM of the WORKSHOP

This Joel Grimes workshop is a must for those who what to take the mystery out of using strobe lighting and learn to become a creative force and THINK LIKE AN ARTIST.

Throw out those lighting diagrams, those annoying lighting ratios and sell your flash-meter on eBay. Well, that may be a bit drastic, but think about this; a technical instrument can never make a creative artistic decision, this is reserved for the human mind.

Over the two days Joel Grimes will be covering how to use all sorts of modifiers such as soft boxes, the beauty dish, octagon banks, umbrellas, grids, etc., while working from an intuitive, feeling approach. This is without question the key to the whole creative process. You will be presented with ways on how to develop your personal creative vision that is unique to you.

Over the two days, Joel Grimes will be having a few fashion/beauty/sports models on site for the hands on lighting demonstration portions. Each of the attendees will have an opportunity to experiment with the various lighting techniques covered in the lectures, so bring your basic camera kit.

And not to be overlooked, Joel Grimes will be covering Joel Grimes' Photoshop techniques used in his photographs, including the HDR techniques used for all my backgrounds. Joel Grimes holds back nothing in revealing his photographic process.

Who is Joel Grimes

Attending his first official art class in middle school was nothing short of heaven. To have art taught in an academic classroom gave validation to the process of creating. It wasn't until his freshman year in high school that Joel Grimes was first introduced to photography. From the very beginning it was a perfect marriage. By the time he began attending college, his passion for the photographic process was all consuming. In 1984 Joel Grimes received a BFA in photography from the University of Arizona and soon after established a commercial studio working out of Denver, Colorado.

Even working in the commercial arena, Joel Grimes have never ceased to view himself as an artist. To position himself any other way would be absurd. He believes it is this uncompromising passion to create that has allowed his commercial work to compete in the market place.
For over 26 years Joel Grimes has worked for many of the top advertising agencies across the globe. Over the years his assignments have taken me him every state across the USA and to over fifty countries around the globe.
In 1992 Joel Grimes produced his first coffee table book, 'Navajo, Portrait of a Nation' which received a number of photographic and design awards and produce an eighteen-month solo exhibit at the Smithsonian American History museum.

In defining his work, Joel Grimes view himself as an illusionist; creating images larger than life. The photographic process is in a constant flux of change. Joel Grimes believes embracing that change gives him a greater option to fulfill his vision as an artist. Without question, he believes we are in the greatest age of photography since its conception.

Over the years Joel Grimes has sought to be an ambassador for the photographic process by teaching workshops and offering video tutorials. He feels that by being an open book with his process, he has an opportunity to inspire others to follow their dreams and passions to create.

Joel Grimes currently resides Pasadena CA. with his wife, Amy and their four sons.

The art of creating
The process of making a great photograph is the merging of two worlds, the technical and the artistic.
It has been my observation over the years that more emphasis and thought seems to be directed towards the technical side of the process and the artistic side often gets overlooked.
I assume that we often get fooled into thinking that if we shoot with a particular brand of camera or apply this particular type of lighting technique, we will in the end produce a greater image.  I have spent many hours testing and honing the technical side of things, but after 30 years of making photographs I must admit, that if we truly want to take our craft to the next level, we ought to direct more energy toward developing the creative artistic side of the process and let the technical fall into place.  I have often said, "Never let a technique drive your personal vision".  That doesn't mean that the technical craft can't play a role in fulfilling the artistic expression in the final image.  However, it is clear that technical proficiency can only take you so far.
The best photographs work because they communicate an emotion, a memory, future hopes or dreams, etc., not f/stops, shutter speeds, focal lengths, or lighting ratios.
This is the essence of photography.
